How to Make Your Loft Conversion the Perfect Child’s Room

If your family is growing, or you need a little more space as a family, a loft conversion bedroom could be the perfect solution. Changing the space in your loft to bedroom space can be an ideal solution when you’re looking to create a child’s bedroom.

But how to go about doing so? If you have decided to change up your loft to bedroom space for a child, here’s the fun part: it’s a blank canvas! So you can truly make it the perfect haven for your child. Here’s how…

Consider your natural light sources

It’s important to consider your natural light sources for a child’s bedroom. Having plenty of natural light is essential for a child’s room in terms of regulating moods. It’s important for homework time too, providing plenty of light to study by.

However, as anyone with a small child will know, blackout blinds are also important! If you have skylight windows, for example, make sure you have specially made blackout blinds fitted for those long summer days. No one needs a 5am wake-up call because the sun’s come out early!

Add an ensuite bathroom

Whether you’ve got small children, tweens or teenagers, we’d always recommend adding an ensuite bathroom to your loft conversion bedroom space. This is because it allows you to have a grown up, adults’ bathroom elsewhere in the home, without the bathroom clutter that comes with children of any age.

Whether it’s the bath toys and empty bottles that little children love, or the lotions, potions and skincare that are part and parcel of teenage life, having an ensuite bathroom attached to a loft conversion bedroom means that all of this clutter is tidied away once the bathroom door is shut, allowing you to retreat to your own adult bathroom downstairs.

Add storage solutions

And while we’re on the subject of children’s clutter, storage is one of the best things you can add when converting a loft into bedroom space, particularly a child’s bedroom space.

It’s important to think about not only clothes, but other items that a child might keep in their bedroom. This could be:

  • Study items: do you need shelving and filing items such as box files? Have you included desk space within your room designs?
  • Play items: whether this is a small zone designated for play for toddlers or pre-schoolers, or at the other end of the scale a gaming zone, think about how you will house any items that go hand-in-hand with these pastimes.
  • Books: books are great within a child’s bedroom to foster a life-long love of reading, and you may want to add a specific reading zone or den within your room design. Even if you don’t have a reading space, have you considered shelving for books?

Additionally, many children like to have items that are precious to them on display. So consider open shelving as part of your loft conversion bedroom interior design to allow them to let their personality shine.

Make the space a place for rest

Ultimately, a loft conversion bedroom needs to be an invitation to rest. Make sure you think about comfort: include soft textures such as fluffy rugs and plush cushions; dress the bed with snuggly bedding and create a feeling of safety and cosiness, ready to give your children a good night’s sleep in their loft conversion bedroom.

Think outside the (bedroom) box!

And here’s the fun part: your blank canvas can be decorated however you or your child wishes! It’s worth thinking about a theme and using that as a basis for your design. This theme could be:

  • Centred around a colour scheme: work with your child to choose a colour scheme that suits you both and then think about aspects such as feature walls and accents of these colours within soft furnishings.
  • To do with a favourite interest: for young children, this could be around something as simple as vehicles or animals; for older children, this could be more of a motif such as rainbows or clouds.
  • Something completely out there: if you want a den of many colours created underneath a bunk bed with stars above it, then go for it! This is the beauty of converting a loft to bedroom space, because it is a blank canvas!

Take your inspiration from places such as interiors magazines and social media, and you’ll find that the sky – or at least the roof – is the limit!
