How to keep your Loft Conversion Cool

Fans and ShadeWe do have our reasons for being weather fanatics, of course, as it does affect the way that we live. Much is made about how to keep your house warm and insulated during the winter months, but as we head towards a (hopefully) glorious British summer, have you thought about how to keep your London loft conversion cool?

You may think that your attic conversion will have all the freshness of a greenhouse this summer, but that’s not strictly true. Here’s how to keep your loft conversion cool this summertime:

Ventilate

It’s obvious, but the more windows you have, the cooler you can make your loft room. In particular, installing a skylight roof window on one sloping ceiling and a vent towards the bottom of the facing wall will pull cooler air up from below, letting it escape out of the higher window on the wall opposite.

Insulate

Although it might sound counter-productive, when it comes to keeping your new loft room cool, properly insulating your loft conversion will actually help to deflect heat away in the summer, particularly if radiant barriers are used. This will also help you save money if you are running an air conditioning system or fan within your room.

Choose Roof Colours Carefully

If you are replacing roof tiles as part of your conversion, opt for lighter shades, such as terracotta, over dark browns and greys, as these will reflect the sun’s rays in the summer months.

Small touches can work wonders when it comes to cooling your loft. Fitting either ceiling fans, if the ceiling height of your new room allows, or even desktop or floor-standing fans will help to circulate cool air, for example.

All dormer and skylight windows should be fitted with retractable blinds or shades, and keeping these closed if the room is not in use during the daytime will help keep it cool for when you return.
